Global Warming and Hurricanes

Writing by mustafa on Sunday, 9 of March , 2008 at 9:28 am

Given the high degree of interest in the possible relationship between climate change and tropical cyclones (including hurricanes and typhoons), a new summary statement on the topic has been developed by the global community of tropical cyclone researchers and forecasters as represented at the 6th International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones of the World Meteorological Organization (November 2006). A more comprehensive statement was also developed at the workshop.

Global lightning activity and climate change

Writing by mustafa on Sunday, 2 of March , 2008 at 10:55 am

The relationship between global lightning frequencies and global climate change is examined in this thesis. In order to study global impacts of climate change, global climate models or General Circulations Models (GCMs) need to be utilized. Since these models have coarse resolutions many atmospheric phenomena that occur at subgrid scales, such as lightning, need to be parameterized whenever possible. (Read more…)

Dr. Mustafa Asfur

Mustafa worked on the topic of sprites, and the detection of the extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic radiation emitted by the lightning that produces the sprite. Optical observations of sprites by Dr. Walt Lyons in Colorado were compared with the ELF measurements in Israel.
